 Putting It to the Test on a Real Pig Control Job

When it comes to thermal optics, there’s nothing quite like taking a new unit out of the showroom and putting it through its paces in the real world.

Recently, we had the opportunity to put the RIX Leap L6R through a proper field test during a pig control job in the Upper Hunter Valley, working around cattle feed lots and the surrounding paddocks.

This was exactly the sort of environment where a thermal optic needs to perform — dark conditions, livestock infrastructure, uneven terrain, vegetation and pigs that certainly don't make things easy!

🔥 First Impressions — Built for the Job

The first thing you'll notice about the RIX Leap L6R is that it has some substance to it.

Compared with some other brands and models in a similar category, the Leap L6R is heavier, and that's something worth considering if you're looking to keep your rifle setup as light as possible.

But after spending time using it in the field, the extra weight wasn't something that concerned us nearly as much as we initially thought it might.

Why? The image quality.

👀 Sharp Image Using Both Optical & Digital Zoom

One of the standout features during this job was how well the Leap L6R maintained a sharp, usable image while using both the ocular magnification and digital zoom functions.

The image captured during the job shows the type of detail we were able to pick up in the field.

At 8.5x magnification, the target is still clearly defined against the background, giving us the confidence to identify what we were looking at before making any decisions.

For a thermal optic being used around cattle feed lots, that's important.

You're not simply looking for a bright white blob on a screen — you want enough definition to distinguish animals, understand their position and assess what's happening around them.

The real-world test is what matters.

Specs on a box are one thing.

Standing in a dark paddock trying to pick up pigs at distance is another.

And that's where the Leap L6R impressed us.

🎯 Field Testing Around Cattle Feed Lots

This particular job provided a great opportunity to test the L6R in conditions that can be challenging for thermal equipment.

Working around cattle feed lots means you're dealing with plenty of background clutter — yards, fencing, vegetation, feed areas and livestock can all create a busy thermal picture.

The Leap L6R handled the environment well, providing a clear thermal image and allowing us to move between magnification levels without the image becoming unusable.

For us, that's one of the biggest positives from this test.

It's not just about how good a thermal looks when you're standing in the shop. It's about how it performs when you're actually out doing the job.

📱 One Feature We're Really Loving

Another feature that really stood out to us was the ability to change the functionality of the buttons through the RIX app.

This might sound like a small feature, but once you've spent time behind different thermal scopes, you realise how useful custom controls can be.

Everyone has their own preferred setup.

Being able to configure the button functionality to suit the way you operate the optic means you can put the functions you use most frequently exactly where you want them.

For us, that's a bloody handy feature.

Instead of adapting yourself to the scope, you can adapt the scope to the way you use it.

🐗 So, What's Our Verdict?

After putting the RIX Leap L6R through a genuine pig control job in the Upper Hunter Valley, we're impressed.

Yes, it's heavier than some comparable thermal scopes, and if absolute minimum weight is your number-one priority, that's something you'll need to take into consideration.

But the trade-off is an optic that delivered a sharp and detailed thermal image, even when making use of the ocular and digital zoom functions.

Add in the ability to customise the controls through the app, and you've got an optic that offers a lot of flexibility for real-world use.

And that's ultimately what we look for at Good Hunt Australia.
